Seeking the Answers to Life, the Universe, and Everything

The new career search has got me thinking.

I should've been the token geeky girl in a manufactured coed British pop group.

...

Maybe?

On a semi-related note, who wants to go to karaoke with me?

Journey into adulthood:
Made a student loan payment today.

22 years old and already switching careers.

Teaching sucks, what do physics majors know how to do?

Haven't done a meme in forever. Got this one off of Pandagon or Feministe, one of the blogs I read.

It's very simple. Eight Random Things about yourself. I did a few randomly ages ago; I like the idea, so may as well do it formally.

01:00 am - Since I've last posted, I have:

*finished my teaching practicum (I think since I've last posted, it may have been a day or two before)

*performed in Forvm

*had a play I wrote performed

*graduated!

*had my longest stay in Seattle since the summer of '04

Whew.

On a completely different note, I'm going to be visiting DC (lovingly known here as the OTHER Washington) in August. Any suggestions on what to see/do/eat?

I've been "cooking" during break.

Last night: parmesan crusted chicken. Mix parmesan cheese with mayonnaise. Slather mixture onto chicken breasts. Top with bread crumbs. Stick in oven (at 425, I think) for 20 minutes.

Today: Had no tartar sauce. Mixed mayo, lemon-pepper seasoning, and lemon juice to make tasty condiment.

Have also been heating up a lot of frozen shrimp and potato pancakes (yay Trader Joe's!). Haven't been out to eat in a couple days, which is good because somehow I didn't get paid last week and have no money, but bad because I actually have time to try out all these restaurants that I've been wanting to.

But messing around in the kitchen is fun too, and, outside of Samuel's and my Friday-night misadventures, I don't get around to much of that during term either.

So I'll tell you the food at my disposal, and you give me suggestions as to what make later tonight. If I'm missing something, I can run out and get it, so if you have a really good idea, toss it my way anyway.

I like being in Bothell, I like being in Boston. I don't even terribly mind six hour plane flights, especially now that I fly JetBlue and there's cable TV and booze. But I hate everything that leads up to the flight. I hate packing. I hate waiting around the airport. I hate check-in and security lines. And did I mention I hate packing?

I'll be back in Boston early tomorrow morning. A couple days to de-jet-lag and plan a lesson, and then I'll be student teaching straight through IAP. I am the hottest high school physics teacher ever.

I voted! And I have a sticker I can wear around to inform people of that fact.

All voting in WA is absentee now, so they go to the trouble of mailing everyone an "I voted" sticker with their ballot. It's a nice touch, and I think an incentive to vote- I'd feel bad having the sticker if I hadn't earned it.

I also recieved my ACLU membership card today, along with a sticker proclaiming me a "card carrying member of the ACLU." I think having a sticker that informs people of the existence of your card is hilarious.

This week has sucked it up royally. I didn't make it to the high school this morning, I skipped 8.05 for the first time EVER (possibly even counting my stint in it last year), sucked up the 8.05 pset...bleh. Bleh.

Things that make me feel better, while we're working on being positive:
1) Samuel and I are going to Legal tomorrow for a dinner full of fishy goodness.
2) Anthony Rapp on youtube.
3) Stephen Colbert singing w/ Manilow.

Jon Stewart is awesome.

"Divorce is not caused because fifty percent of marriages end in gayness." -Jon Stewart

I got the Teachers' Edition of America (The Book). It's like they made it just for me.

I think I'm going to get involved with Brookline's Gay-Straight Alliance.

And now, three hours of 8.05. Bleh.

Observing at Brookline has so far taught me many, many things. One of them is that I am currently lacking many of the accessories required of the suburban high school teacher.

*big-ass bag to hold lesson plan book, papers to be graded, textbook, and what will hopefully be a MacBook earned sometime this summer. The ability to hold all of these things plus a small cat is a bonus. When bag-shopping, the first thing I do with a candidate is hold my plan book up to it to make sure that it fits.

*sturdy tupperware to hold last night's leftovers to be today's lunch. I didn't see any insulated lunch bags, but probably a good idea to prevent said leftovers from spilling onto said ungraded papers on what will undoubtedly be a long T-ride to school

*high-quality thermos. I do not drink coffee at the moment, but I really should. 5:30 AM Red Bull cannot be good for you

*Aforementioned iBook/MacBook. No Linux boxes here.

My mentor teacher is going to get me a key to the staff bathroom. I got way too excited about this...but the staff bathrooms are really nice. There are pictures on the wall, and they're clean.

I'm OK. Really. Just massively, massively jittery. I'm not ready to be a person of any sort of authority whatsoever, I'm not ready for people to look up to me, I'm not ready to be responsible for breaking a valedictorian or telling Jimmy or Janey why MIT simply isn't an option. I'm not ready to have to get up by 6 at the latest every single blessed day or be called Miss Eugenio. I'm not ready to have to find a job and an apartment and pay utilities. I'm simply not ready for all this adult shit.

The harder you work, the smarter you are, and the nicer a person you are, the more life punishes you. The reward for slaving through 13 years of public education was four years of sleeplessness, constant stress, nervous breakdowns, anxiety attacks, and feelings of inadequacy. The reward for going into public service is shit pay and no respect from parents, students, taxpayers, the government, and people of industry. It isn't ever the stupid jerks who suffer for their stupidity and jerkoffishness (Greg).

There are thousands of dollars in prizes for the soldier design competition, huge rewards to make people more efficient killers. Where's the thousands of dollars in prizes for a college competition to see who can prevent wars in the first place? I really, really wanted to ask this off the old white men in suits running the soldier design competition table in the student center.

My cat will be named Pico. My dog will be named "Eigen," because it makes me incredibly sad that eigen was not actually a person. I should change my last name to Eigen. And then everyone will think I am descended from whoever discovered eigenvalues and eigenvectors and eigenstates, and that would be awesome.

Just call me Theresa Eigen. I wouldn't even have to change my initials.

I beat the jumpman widget in the new mac cluster. I live here now, and it's close to the TEAL room, so I could sleep here Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights. And M/W I have to go to bed obscenely early because I start at Brookline High this week....which means getting up for like the 7:00 train. Ick.

And the kids will call me Miss Eugenio. Double-ick.

[info]despiojarse12 is snoring peacefully behind me and I'm watching clips from Rent and Whose Line on YouTube...Whose Line is out on DVD now, I'll have to pick that up tomorrow...but yeah, tonight was nice. I'm almost entirely over my cold and I had the best grilled cheese and bacon sandwich at the All Star Sandwich Bar, which is right next door to my favorite improv club. Inman Square is superb.

This weekend is busy:

*Catch up with Huck Finn reading.
*Catch up w/ 11.129 reading and paper.
*Start 8.05 pset.
*Grade metric fuckton of 8.01 quizzes. Complete with gold stars for those who score above 90.

Sadly my T-Pass does not kick in till Monday.
